After receiving a first round bye, Liverpool were drawn against German opponents Dynamo Dresden, a side they
had brushed aside 18 months earlier on their way to UEFA Cup success.
A five goal blast showed the rest of Europe that the Reds meant business and were intent on retaining the crown they had won in Rome's Olympic Stadium months earlier. |

Benfica, twice winners of the tournament, were sporting an incredible unbeaten run of 46 games at the
Stadium of Light when Liverpool arrived. Within minutes of the kick off they were in front and being
roared on by a 70,000 crowd.
However, the Reds soon gained the upper hand in the torrential rain and a Jimmy Case equaliser took the sides in level at half time. Emlyn Hughes scored the winner in the 72nd minute to complete a memorable victory. |

After defeating the Germans in the 1973 EUFA Cup final and in the 1977 European Cup final, was it to be a
case of third time unlucky for Liverpool ? After the first leg tie the answer was a resounding 'maybe'.
A late David Johnson away goal seemed to have secured a 1-1 draw for the Reds but Borussia managed a last gasp winner to keep the tie intriguingly poised for the Anfield leg. This was also the match in which new signing Graeme Souness made his European bow. |

Borussia were simply outclassed at Anfield. An early Ray Kennedy goal settled the nerves and levelled the aggregate scores ( with the Reds having the all important away goal ). Second half goals from Dalglish and Case then eased Liverpool through. Remarkably, this was the first of only two ever European occasions in which the magnificent midfield quartet of Case, McDermott, Souness and Kennedy played a full 90 minutes. |

Not a classic by any means but Liverpool set new records with this win by becoming the first English/British
side to win the European Cup twice. Emlyn Hughes became the first English captain to lift two European Cups,
a feat that still remains to be emulated over two decades on.
FC Bruges had been Liverpool's opponents in the 1976 UEFA Cup final and their side showed only a few changes of personnel. Liverpool on the other hand had 'lost' Smith, Jones, Keegan, Heighway and Callaghan from the glorious Rome side. The most memorable event of a relatively tame 90 minutes was the sublimely chipped goal by Dalglish, put through clinically by fellow Scot Souness, on 65 minutes. It was his 30th of a remarkable debut season for the Reds. |
